Shopping for plumbing fixtures

Shopping for plumbing fixtures can be confusing if you are not a plumber. Plumbing has many different materials, parts, and types of connections. Most of the time homeowners do not need this information, however, a certain level of understanding is sometimes appropriate. One such time is when design decisions need to be made for a bathroom remodel. Most bathroom remodel contractors and tile installation contractors would prefer design decisions be confirmed by the homeowner as soon as possible. Therefore, homeowners should learn about what they are shopping for.

A.B.S. and Copper pipe

There are two main types of pipe that we like to install these days. They are copper pipe, and A.B.S. pipe. Copper is a very durable metal that does not rust, and A.B.S. is a very durable plastic. A.B.S. stands for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, I’ll bet you didn’t know that. One thing I’ll bet you do know is that copper is a reddish orange color and was used to make pennies until 1982. Copper pipe is used for supply lines and A.B.S. is used for drains.

Copper connections to shower valves

Welded connections, and threaded connections are the two main ways copper supply lines are connected to shower valves. Of course, welded connections are more reliable than threaded connections. The pipe goes inside the valve when the pieces are welded. In contrast, the threaded connection screws on the outside of the inlet. A shower valve can sometimes have an option for either a welded or threaded connection. This image shows a Delta universal valve. This valve has many different handle and trim plate options that can attach to it. In most cases, you can purchase the valve and trim kit together.

Two inch A.B.S. pipe is used for shower drains. This image shows a three piece drain. The three pieces are, drain flange, riser, and drain grate. If you buy a drain while shopping for plumbing fixtures, please buy a 3 piece.
